Maribel P. Khoury, MD

Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician | Fellowship-Trained in Psychiatry

Dr. Maribel “Bella” Khoury is a board-certified family medicine physician with over 20 years of clinical experience, offering a thoughtful, integrative approach to mental and physical health. She is known for her ability to bridge evidence-based medical care with a deeper understanding of the human experience—supporting patients in achieving clarity, resilience, and overall well-being.

Dr. Khoury earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Family Medicine at Kaiser Permanente Southern California (Los Angeles). She later pursued advanced training in psychiatry, deepening her expertise in the connection between mental health, brain function, and whole-person care.

Throughout her career, Dr. Khoury has worked extensively in underserved communities, including her work with Clinica Medica Hispana (later acquired by AltaMed), where she provided care to diverse populations with complex medical and psychosocial needs. These experiences have shaped her commitment to accessible, culturally responsive, and equitable healthcare.

Her approach—often described as mindful medicine—integrates the strengths of Western medical science with mindfulness-informed practices, while also honoring principles found in Eastern healing traditions, such as the role of balance, nervous system regulation, and complementary approaches like acupuncture. She recognizes that true healing often occurs when multiple dimensions of care are considered together.

While modern neuroscience allows us to study the brain in extraordinary detail, Dr. Khoury believes that healing extends beyond what can be measured alone—requiring attention to the mind, meaning, and lived human experience.

Dr. Khoury’s perspective is also shaped by her own personal health journey. Living with multiple sclerosis has deepened her understanding of resilience, uncertainty, and the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Khoury is the founding charter president of the Rotary Club of Mental Health & Wellness, reflecting her commitment to advancing mental health awareness, access, and community-based care both locally and globally.

Dr. Khoury identifies as Latina and Middle Eastern and is fluent in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Her multicultural background and multilingual abilities allow her to connect with individuals from a wide range of cultural experiences with sensitivity and understanding.

Today, Dr. Khoury offers comprehensive consultations, medication evaluations, and second-opinion services for individuals seeking a deeper, more integrative understanding of their mental health. Her work is grounded in collaboration, education, and empowering patients to make informed decisions aligned with their values and goals.
